IRHA to vote on Jischke bill tonight

Two Inter-Residence Hall Association representatives who do not want the new honors building to be named after former ISU President Martin Jischke will present their arguments to IRHA tonight.

The bill, titled “Honor Must Be Earned,” was submitted last week and will be voted on tonight.

The resolution states that Jischke was disliked by the majority of students and does not deserve the honor of having the building named after him.

“The general feeling is that Jischke had a very negative impact on the residence halls,” said IRHA President Paul

Duncan.

The Veishea pledge initiated by Jischke after the 1997 murder of Uri Sellers affected residence hall students more than any other group, Duncan said.

“I think for the most part, the majority of the IRHA will agree,” said Jessica Raim, UDA at-large representative and co-author of the bill.

In addition, Randy Alexander, director of residence, will speak to IRHA members at tonight’s meeting about room and board rates. “This is something we do every year,” Alexander said.

IRHA members can approve or disapprove the rate increases, Duncan said.

“This will be a slightly larger increase than in past years for a variety of reasons,” he said, citing “the state of Iowa cutting back on funding to the schools and the rising cost of employee benefits at a faster rate than expected.”

If IRHA approves the rates, Duncan said, the proposal will then go to the Board of Regents for final approval.

Dave Boike, IRHA vice president, said IRHA also will discuss a finance bill, titled “What the heck is IRHA” to approve funding for a pamphlet about IRHA that will be distributed by the house presidents at house meetings.

The estimated cost for production of pamphlets is $1,000, Duncan said.

IRHA also will discuss its Feb. 15 meeting with ISU President Gregory Geoffroy.

“We’re going to ask him a variety of questions to see what his views are on a lot of residence hall issues,” Duncan said.
