People still see decision as murder

Since the Roe v. Wade decision was handed down 29 years ago, groups and individuals against abortion have continued to stand up for their beliefs.

Joe Vos, former president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, said the thought of the legal murdering of unborn lives sickens him.

“It makes no difference to me if the baby is in the womb or two years old,” said Vos, senior in mechanical engineering. “Anyone who has seen an ultrasound ought to agree with that.”

God has the ultimate decision of who lives and dies, Vos said.

“Abortion is murder, and Deuteronomy 5:17 says, `You shall not murder,’ ” he said. “Abortion being made legal is directly opposing this commandment. God did not leave it up to the government to decide on this issue.

“Which part of `You shall not murder’ is left open for discussion? The `you shall not’ or the `murder’?” Vos said.

The best way to get his beliefs across to others is to educate them on what really happens in an abortion, he said.

Despite Vos’ belief that abortion is wrong, he said it does not make him hate people who choose to have abortions.

“As a Christian, I hate the sin but love the sinner,” Vos said.

Iowa Right to Life Committee Executive Director Kim Gordon participated in the Walk for Life in Washington, D.C., Monday. The walk was organized by the National Right to Life Committee, of which the Iowa Right to Life Committee is an affiliate.

Many times women are not given complete information regarding the medical risks and harms of abortion, Gordon said.

“You’re going to have very few women regretting having an abortion if they are informed of the medical risks and harm,” she said.

Information is withheld from women by abortion providers because the abortion providers are afraid the details will scare women, Gordon said.

“If you claim to be pro-choice and you’re saying a woman should have a choice to get an abortion or not, information should not be withheld to keep the woman from getting the abortion,” she said. “That’s not pro-choice, it’s pro-abortion.”

Women should be given information regarding an abortion regardless of whether the information could scare her, because women need to be informed of the risks, Gordon said

“Let her have the information, let her understand her dangers – be honest with her,” she said. “And then you’re going to see fewer women going in for an abortion.”
