DPS will watch grass, stadium at Iowa game

Security for the Iowa-Iowa State football game will be increased, but officers say they don’t anticipate problems.

Doug Houghton, program manager for the Department of Public Safety, said there will be more tents in the parking lots close to the stadium than usual, which will cut down on parking.

However, Houghton said, there are plenty of other places to park.

“The Iowa game comes at the end of Thanksgiving Break,” he said. “One benefit is that students won’t have to worry about moving their cars Saturday night, because they will already be gone.”

Ames Police Sgt. Mike Johns said the only difference for security inside the stadium will be that more fans will sit in the grass area and in the bleachers.

“We usually put two more officers in the Iowa game, because it is sold out,” he said.

Houghton said DPS, the Ames Police Department, the Story County Sheriff’s Department and Iowa State Troopers will all work together to make game security, parking and traffic as safe and smooth as possible.

“We’ve had a really good season. Things have gone very well for almost all the games,” he said. “As long as people think, this whole concept of 50,000 people in limited space should work well.”
