Campus groups to sell holiday trees, poinsettias, wreaths

Three student clubs are selling Christmas trees, holiday wreaths and poinsettias to get the ISU community into the holiday spirit.

Starting today, the Forestry Club will be selling Christmas trees at the Reiman Gardens Maintenance Shop and east of Scholl Road near the Applied Sciences Complex, said Zack Ludwig, Forestry Club chairman.

“The money raised goes towards the club to different service events,” said Ludwig, senior in forestry. “We also donate money to different organizations, such as Dance Marathon.”

Ludwig said he is hoping to sell 200 trees this year, up from last year’s sale of 175 trees. The Christmas tree sale is the only fund-raiser the Forestry Club has.

The club grows a few trees, but the majority will come from a tree farm in Wisconsin owned by a forestry professor.

The ISU Arboriculture Club will also sell Christmas wreaths at the Reiman Gardens Maintenance Shop, Ludwig said.

The Horticulture Club is holding its annual poinsettia sale Dec. 5-7 at the Memorial Union and on the bottom floor of Curtiss Hall, said Megan McConnell, Horticulture Club president.

“This is definitely our biggest sale of the year,” said McConnell, senior in horticulture.

Most of the money will go toward a trip to Chicago, and the rest will go into the club’s general fund.

The poinsettias range in size and are available in pink, white, marble and red.

“The biggest ones are always the first to go,” McConnell said. “They are gorgeous this year, so come early.”

This year, the Horticulture Club will feature the winter rose poinsettia, McConnell said. The winter rose poinsettias are different because the red-colored leaves are shaped like roses.

“The Horticulture Club has been having these poinsettia sales as far back that we have records for,” McConnell said. “At least 50 years.”

Where to buy them

The Christmas trees will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Dec. 2 at the Reiman Gardens Maintenance Shop. Sales also will be held Dec. 7 through Dec. 9 and Dec. 14 through Dec. 16 at the Reiman Gardens Maintenance Shop.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the club also will have a choose-and-cut sale east of Scholl Road near the Applied Sciences Complex. The sale will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all three days. The price varies depending on the size of the tree.

Poinsettias will be sold from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5 through Dec. 7 near the west side stairwell at the Memorial Union and on the bottom floor of Curtiss Hall. Prices range from $5 to $14.
