Cycles circle campus all night

The ISU Cycling Club was spinning circles around campus this weekend with a 24-hour bike ride to raise awareness of the club.

The club wanted to turn the day-long ride into a fund-raiser, but it was too late in the year for the club to complete arrangements, said Will Allen, secretary and treasurer for the club.

Instead, the club will repeat its campus ride in the spring to raise money, said Allen, junior in mechanical engineering.

“I’m pumped up,” Allen said before the weekend’s event. “We may get a little dizzy but it will be fun.”

Although the team wasn’t ready to raise money, that didn’t stop 10 club members from riding around campus from 4:15 p.m. Friday until 4:15 p.m. Saturday. The club started at the Memorial Union, road down Morrill Road past the library to Osborn Drive, pedaled past Kildee Hall and down Knoll Road back to the Union.

Allen said at least one or two people would circle the loop continuously during these times.

“This gave us a lot of insight on how to [raise funds],” said Nate Lohmeier, Cycling Club president. “We will need a few more people” in the spring.

Ryan Grimm, webmaster for the club, said he would participate in the event again.

“Around 8 or 9 p.m., we were concerned we wouldn’t have enough people,” said Grimm, junior in computer science, “but it turned out OK anyway.”

He said the group has not done a fund-raiser before.

“We are trying to change the club around this year, to get it more involved,” Grimm said.

The Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity are possible recipients of the money from the spring ride, said Lohmeier, junior in French.

“We will do a lot more work around local bike shops and advertising,” he said. “We’ll do our best to get as many people in the community involved.”

Cycling Club member Randy Wahl, junior in mechanical engineering, rode 170 miles in 12 hours, Lohmeier said.

“That was nearly 200 laps, which is absolutely insane,” Lohmeier said.

The only major excitement came when a couple of cyclists crashed while trying to do a whole lap without their hands, he said.
