Students might soon be able to get others’ schedules online

Students may be able to find study buddies electronically next semester, as plans are formulated to give students the option to post their schedules online through AccessPlus.

“The idea is still in progress,” said Abby Bliss, Inter-Residence Hall Association director of academic affairs.

“We are still planning the format and what specific information will be available.”

Bliss said students would be able to enter an AccessPlus screen asking them to donate their schedule.

Students may then respond by clicking “yes” or “no.” If “yes” is chosen, students can submit their information and would be able to access other students’ information. If students choose not to submit their schedule, they will not have the opportunity to view others’ schedules, Bliss said.

Mimi Benjamin, coordinator of residence life for academic success, has consulted with the Academic Affairs Committee on this idea.

“My job is to ask questions regarding how students can enter a Web site and be able to put their schedules online,” Benjamin said.

The issue of what exact information will be posted has yet to be decided.

“The information will probably be name, address, telephone number and e-mail,” Bliss said.

The other option would be to exclude addresses for students’ privacy, she said.

Students have mixed feelings about the disclosure of their personal information.

“I think it’s a good idea because if you had to miss class for some reason, it would be very helpful to get the notes from someone,” said Lexi Schlafer, junior in communication studies.

“I’m not scared of having my address online. Besides, some people never check their e-mail.”

Brandy Mitchell, junior in apparel merchandising, design and production, said she would not want her address posted with her schedule.

“I wouldn’t want my address on there because I wouldn’t want random people stopping by,” she said.

Bliss said if students would like to give opinions on what information to post, they may go to the Academic Affairs Advisory Board Meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Union Pine Room.

They can also e-mail her at [email protected].
