More students, buildings on way for Hawthorn

Several more buildings soon will be completed at Hawthorn Court – although not as soon as administration predicted.

James Judy, assistant director for Department of Residence facilities planning, said he originally thought buildings 71 and 72 would be ready for students in the first part of October.

The projected October completion date recently was pushed back, due to “contractual issues,” Judy said.

He said building 71 will be ready for occupancy by the middle of October, after some landscaping and inspection work.

Buildings 72, 73 and 74 are expected to be finished by the Nov. 16 deadline, letting students move at spring semester.

Early completion of Building 71 is good news for students still in temporary housing, as well as Hawthorn Court residents, said Mary Beth Golemo, Hawthorn Court coordinator.

“The bigger numbers of students moving into the new building are those already in Hawthorn,” she said.

These are students who are living in shared-bedroom apartments, but who signed contracts for single-bedroom apartments, Golemo said.

Temporarily living in shared apartments was a way for students to get into an otherwise full Hawthorn Court, she said, knowing they had first priority when more singles opened up.

“The downfall to any delays is that we can’t deliver as quickly as we would like for those who signed a contract,” Golemo said.

Rachel Murken, junior in horticulture and Hawthorn resident, said she did not get her first choice for a four-bedroom apartment but signed a two-bedroom contract. She and her roommates are on a waiting list for the new buildings.

Benny Volkmann, junior in mechanical engineering, said he and his roommates signed a contract for a shared, because they turned in their preference sheet for a four bedroom late.

He said they don’t want to move at semester even if they could get into a new building.

“We’re pretty happy where we are,” Volkmann said.
