Flag football team heads to state championship

Guided by their team captain Jason Vos and the throwing arm of their quarterback Andy Malin ,team Chubb defeated Studweiser 34-0 in the Class A flag football championship on Oct. 11. With the victory, Chubb will advance for the second straight year to the state tournament at Drake University on Nov. 3.

“The [championship] game was pretty competitive,” Vos, senior in history, said. “It feels good to be representing Iowa State, and hopefully we can win the whole thing.”

Malin, junior in industrial engineering, said the team is going to state with the attitude to win and represent Iowa State the best it can.

Chubb, made up of Farm House fraternity members, suffered a 16-6 loss to Studweiser earlier in the year and was prepared for a tough final.

“We knew they were good coming in,” Malin said. “We were glad to have the opportunity to avenge our earlier season loss.”

Malin said his team had a few scripted plays coming into the game and the rest was just reading the Studweiser defense.

“Once we scored six points we wanted to score 12,” Malin said. “Twelve became 20 and 20 became 30, we just kept rolling.”

Chubb will be a part of an eight-team state championship ,Linda Marticke, intramural coordinator for Recreation Services, said. Marticke added that the winner of the state tournament will have its entry fee paid to go to regionals in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Nov. 16-18.

“This same team finished second in state last year,” Vos said. “It was a whole lot of fun and the teams were strong, but we intend to compete for the title again this year.”

Malin said this year’s team is full of seniors and it might be the last time these guys get a chance to see regionals.

“We have been playing together for about three years now,” Malin said. “We are taking everything one step at a time; first Iowa State, then the state tournament, regionals and possibly nationals.”

The other members of team Chubb are Scott Adams, junior in industrial engineering; Bryce Christensen, junior in transportation and logistics; Gregg Christensen, agricultural business; John Gabrielson, freshman in architecture; Gabe Karber, sophomore in animal science; Adam Laug, senior in management information systems; Thad Phillips, junior in marketing; Kevin Schulte, senior in biology; Jesse Simpson, senior in anthropology and Chad Wiles, junior in mechanical engineering.
