Sexual assault claim false

A woman who told the Department of Public Safety she was abducted and sexually assaulted by four men admitted Thursday morning she fabricated her claim, DPS officials said.

Capt. Gene Deisinger, with the special operations unit for DPS, said a white female accused four black males of kidnapping her at gun point from the north end of campus Tuesday morning.

The woman initially told officers the men drove her to a wooded area, where they sexually assaulted her.Deisinger said inconsistencies in the woman’s story led to her confession.

“We were able to disprove that this occurred,” he said. “When we presented her with these facts, she acknowledged that [her accusation] was false.”

The woman’s main motive for fabricating her story has not been released.

“I can not speculate on motive with regards to this case,” said Jerry Stewart, interim director of DPS.

He said there are certain generalities that can be made in cases in which a person fabricates a crime.

“Reports pertaining to reasons for falsifying property damage usually involve insurance fraud,” Stewart said. “False allegations pertaining to personnel violence often center around the need or desire for attention.”

Deisinger said the woman claimed Thursday she had been threatened at a park last week.

“We are investigating fully,” he said. “We are attempting to verify all complaints that were made.”

Deisinger said DPS has not yet pressed any charges. He said it would be “premature for me to say at this time.”

The department will make its final decision after talking with the Story County Attorney’s Office, Deisinger said.

Stewart said the case has taken a lot of time away from several agencies.

He said agencies all over “Central Iowa were very diligent in their attempts to locate the vehicle” described by the woman.

“A number of officers and supply personnel worked around the clock,” he said.

Deisinger described the falsified case as an “exhaustive use of personnel and resources.”
