Campus political groups still keeping active

In the aftermath of a major election year, student political groups still are keeping busy with activities.

Molly Scherrman, president of ISU Democrats, said it is difficult to keep people involved during non-presidential elections that don’t receive as much attention.

However, she said, there is still lots to do during the smaller elections.

“There are going to be some very exciting primary elections taking place, as well as some heated congressional races and the governor’s race,” said Scherrman, junior in psychology.

Matt Denner, member of ISU Greens, said students who really care about politics and getting involved will stay active.

“People who care about political issues can see we are one of the hardest working groups on campus and will stay involved,” said Denner, freshman in liberal arts and sciences.

College Republicans chairwoman Angie Darrah said there isn’t always a campaign for the organization to help out with during the year, but there is always something happening.

“During a year when we don’t have a candidate to help, we bring in political science professors or people who hold an office to talk about current events,” said Darrah, senior in management information systems.

The Iowa State Libertarians are working to get out their name to students this year, increasing political activism and motivating people to get involved, said Brian Anderson, president of the Iowa State Libertarians.

“If you are interested, don’t be afraid to get involved,” said Anderson, junior in horticulture. “We will not bite your head off. we are pretty easy-going people, and we try to make the meetings fun.”

The Green Party doesn’t have a platform, but it keeps 10 key values, Denner said. The party will publically release the list of values this fall.

“The Green Party is moving on to get ready for the upcoming elections, and we are trying to work on the Story County Green Party,” he said.

Denner said the ISU Greens still want ISU students to attend Story County Greens meeting, because students are residents of Story County.

The ISU Democrats, like the Greens, also are involved with their Story County affiliate.

“We often pair up and help the Story County Democrats with their events,” Scherrman said. “There will be plenty of campaigning activities, which is a wonderful way to get involved and meet the candidates.”

She said a goal of the ISU Democrats is to get more people involved in the political arena as well as educated on important issues.

“The main goals for ISU Democrats are to get as many people involved in the organization as possible, get students acquainted with the area’s elected officials, as well as the candidates who will be running in the primaries in next year’s election,” Scherrman said.

The College Republicans are looking forward to a busy year with lots of involvement, Darrah said.

“We work with local candidates that are running for different offices and help them with their campaign,” she said.

Getting involved provides good experience for people who have political interest, she said.

“It is a really good way to get involved in campus and meet people that have the same view,” she said.
