Country music fans will have to find a new place to hang their cowboy hats: Hunky Dory’s Night Club has closed down.

Hunky Dory’s Night Club, 300 S. 17th St., closed its doors for remodeling on July 7.

Linda Dedecker, accountant for Hunky Dory’s, said the bar will reopen as an events center in August under a new name.

“We don’t have a name picked out yet,” she said. “It will be available for people to rent for banquets, weddings and parties.”

David Wheelock, owner of Hunky Dory’s, was out of town and not available for comment.

Dedecker said the bar had been open since 1991, but the owner was ready for a change.

“It was just the right time for change” she said.

Dedecker said she has received several phone calls from Hunky Dory’s customers asking what is going on.

Kay Friest, senior in liberal arts and sciences and history, said her friends were upset when they heard the bar was closed.

“We go there all the time,” she said. “That was our Thursday night plans. I don’t know where we’ll go now.”

Friest said friends tried to go to Hunky Dory’s a couple of nights ago and realized it was closed.

“The uptown bars are very different, ” she said. “It was the only place in town that plays country music. I liked the variety.”

For the last two years, the College of Agriculture has hosted an Ag Week dance and the Best Butts Contest at Hunky Dory’s Night Club.

Nikki Huinker, junior in family and consumer science education, said she is disappointed about the change.

“It was something different,” she said. “There’s people upset about it.”

Even though Hunky Dory’s is changing its focus, Dedecker is optimistic about its future.

“We are taking bookings for events in August,” Dedecker said. “The first event is scheduled for Aug. 7.”
