Police have no suspects in downtown burglaries

Police officials haven’t identified any suspects in the four downtown breaks-in which happened late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Shellie Hayes, public information officer of the Ames Police Department, said the burglaries were probably related, considering the time frame they occurred in and consistent tactics used in them.

“Right now we’re treating them as related,” she said.

Wheatsfield Grocery, 413 Douglas Ave., Ron’s Auto Repair Center, 119 Washington Ave., Evert Flowers, Plants and Gifts, 412 Burnett Ave., and K Renee Inc., 526 Main St., all were targeted by burglar(s).

Hayes said mostly cash was taken from the businesses.

Cpl. Rory Echer said investigations are under way and there are no suspects at this time.

“We’re probably looking at the same people given the time frame and the area,” he said. “Other than that we really haven’t come up with any more.”

He said this is the third time Wheatsfield Grocery has been broken into, but he doesn’t think the three are connected.

The main street area has been hit frequently lately, and Hayes said it is due to the close quarters of the businesses. “There is not a lot of traffic after the bars close,” she said. “They have a lot of access to a lot of businesses in a very close area of town.”
