Iowa State loses two in College Station

The ISU softball team dropped two games this weekend to Texas A&M in a Big 12 conference matchup.

No. 23 Texas A&M downed Iowa State 11-2 in Saturday’s game before coming up with a close win, 3-2, in Sunday’s game in College Station, Texas.

The two losses dropped the Cyclones record to 11-19 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12 while Texas A&M raised its record to 27-11 with a 4-5 record in the conference.

Saturday’s game was highlighted by a solid hitting display by Texas A&M.

The Aggies pounded out 13 hits on their way to the 11-2 win in five innings.

Texas A&M scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead that they would never relinquish.

It appeared Iowa State was going to get out of the inning with A&M leading 2-0 with two outs, but a close play at first base was overturned after Texas A&M player Crystal Martin was originally called out on the play.

Iowa State got on the board in the fourth inning when Kimi Yoshizawa hit a one-out single to left field and Erica Martinez followed with her fifth homerun of the season to make it 5-2.

The Aggies added another run in the fourth inning off a solo homerun and finished with a fun-run outburst in the fifth inning to put into effect the eight-run rule.

Sophomore hurler Jen Bice recorded the loss for the Cyclones, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Erica Martinez’s homerun enabled her to finish 1 for 2 at the plate with two RBI for the Cyclones. Yoshizawa, Rainey Eanes, Lauren Cathey and Amberly Lessenger each added a hit in the loss.

Iowa State showed their competitive spirit in Sunday’s matchup, falling to the Aggies 3-2 in a game that went down to the wire.

Texas A&M got on the board first in the first inning, scoring two runs on a homerun by Kelly Ferguson over the leftfield fence to take the early lead.

The Aggies added another run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead into the third.

The Cyclones got on the board in the third inning when Yoshizawa hit a double down the left field line to lead off the inning.

Centerfielder Adi Blackmon advanced Yoshizawa to third on a ground out.

Yoshizawa later scored Iowa State’s first run of the game on a Mindy Ogan single, making the score 3-1.

Iowa State added another run in the top of the fourth inning.

Freshman Rainey Eanes started with a walk and scored on another double by Yoshizawa.

The Aggies held the Cyclones scoreless the rest of the way on their way to the 3-2 win.

Bice recorded the loss for the Cyclones giving up two runs on three hits in one inning, dropping her season record to 6-10.

Martinez saw action in relief, allowing one run on seven hits in five innings of work.

Yoshizawa led the way offensively for the Cyclones, capping off an impressive day at the plate going 2 for 3 with two doubles and one RBI.

Ogan added a hit and a RBI in the loss while Morgan LeCluyse and Kristin Shipley each contributed a hit.

A&M has won three straight Big 12 conference games after dropping four of five to start the season while Iowa State has now dropped two straight conference games.

The Aggies two wins increase their all-time record in the series against Iowa State to 16-3, including a 11-2 mark in regular-season Big 12 games.

Next action for the Cyclones will be Tuesday when they travel to Kansas City, Mo. to take on UMKC in a double-header scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

The Cyclones turn around and play their next game Wednesday when they host Iowa at Southwest Athletic Complex.
