Sophomore sensation Alan Bomer threw a complete game, a seven-hit gem as Iowa State [9-13-1, 4-4] knocked off 19th ranked Oklahoma State [23-9, 8-7] 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader between the Big 12 schools Sunday afternoon at L.C. Capp Timm Field.

“Alan had a great performance today,” head coach Lyle Smith said. “I thought he got stronger as the game went along.”

Bomer went the distance for the Cyclones, striking out eight, walking two and scattering seven hits.

He was helped by teammates Rob Conway, T.J. Bohn and Brent Koen who each drove in a run in the victory.

Iowa State’s first run, however, did not come in the form of a hit, but rather on a wild pitch by Oklahoma State’s Nick McCurdy in the bottom of the third. Joe Urban, who led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a bunt by Ryan Wickham and scored on McCurdy’s errant throw to give the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma State got on the board in the top of fifth as Ali Modami flied out to center field scoring Toby Rhodes and tying the contest at 1-1.

McCurdy’s bid for a no-hitter lasted into the sixth inning, but it wasn’t meant to be as three Cyclones recorded hits off the OSU starter, bringing in one run and forcing him to retire early.

Oklahoma State then called on reliever Mike Miller to quiet the ISU rally, and he did so successfully with Iowa State leading 2-1 .

With the lead now in hand, Bomer took the mound in the seventh inning and struck out the side. His teammates came to his aid in the bottom of the eighth inning by adding two insurance runs. The first came on a single by Conway that scored Spencer Allen. An error by OSU second baseman Nebasset Brown later brought Conway home.

Bomer finished off Oklahoma State in the top of the ninth, notching his eighth and final strikeout to end the game as Oklahoma State’s Brad Bouris was caught looking at the game’s final pitch.

“I had good command with three pitches today and that helped out a lot,” Bomer said. “It’s a huge win. After winning the first game and losing the second game, its big to come away with the win and two out of three for the series.”

In the first game Sunday, Oklahoma State held off a late rally by Iowa State to win 7-6. Oklahoma State’s Scott Baker recorded the win for the Cowboys as Lincoln Mincks took the loss for Iowa State. Paul Powell hit a grand slam for the visitors and Jake Bollig had two RBI. Conway had three RBI and Allen added two RBI in a losing effort.

In the first game of the series played Friday, Iowa State beat Oklahoma State 9-4 behind a five inning effort from starter Charly Bigwood and a balanced offensive attack. Conway led the way with two RBI, and five other players had one RBI a piece.

Up next for the Cyclones will be a trip to Iowa City where they will face their in-state rivals for the second time this season. Iowa State took the first game between the two teams, 5-3, in Ames.

The Cyclones will then return home to face Winona State in a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. start Wednesday.
