The ISU softball team fell to 12-21 on the season and 1-7 in the Big 12 following two losses to the University of Texas Saturday.

The Cyclones played well in both contests but weren’t able to come away with a win, falling 5-3 in game one and 3-2 in the second game of the double-header.

The Longhorns jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, adding two more runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead in the game.

Iowa State finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning.

Adi Blackmon singled for the Cyclones to lead off the inning and advanced to second base on an Amberly Lessenger ground out. Kimi Yoshizawa later reached on an error scoring Blackmon to cut the score down to 4-1.

The Cyclones scored another run in the sixth inning to cut the lead down to two runs, but Texas added an issuance run in the bottom of the sixth to build on its lead.

Iowa State’s rally in the seventh inning wasn’t enough as it was only able to generate one run on an Erica Martinez RBI single to right field to make the final score 5-3 in the Longhorns’ favor.

Jen Bice took the mound for the Cyclones in the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Martinez continued her strong hitting charge going 2-4 at the plate with one RBI. Freshman Julia Lindsey also had a solid game going 2-3 while Blackmon, Lessenger, Rainey Eanes, Morgan LeCluyse and Laura Browning each added a hit.

The Cyclones were able to get out to the early lead in the night cap, scoring one run in the top of the first inning.

Blackmon led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. Lessenger was walked to put ISU runners at both first and second. Blackmon reached third base on a fielder’s choice and later stole home to give Iowa State the 1-0 lead.

Texas answered back in both the third and fourth innings, scoring one run in both innings to take the 2-1 lead.

Iowa State was able to tie the game up in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI double by Martinez, but Texas answered back with another run in the bottom of the inning holding on for the 3-2 win.

Martinez took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing three runs on one hit in four innings of work. Senior Kristin Ferguson came in relief, allowing two hits in two innings of work.

Martinez again led the Cyclones offensively, contributing two hits and one RBI while Eanes, Blackmon, Lindsey and Yoshizawa also recorded a hit a piece in the loss.

The two losses kept Iowa State winless versus Texas with the Longhorns holding a 11-0 lifetime advantage.

The Cyclones were scheduled to host Oklahoma State in a double-header yesterday at noon but the games were canceled due to poor weather conditions.

Next action for Iowa State is tomorrow when it travels to Iowa City to take on Iowa in an in-state matchup scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Iowa State will return home the following day to face Nebraska at 4 p.m. at the ISU Southwest Athletic Complex.
