The ISU women’s gymnastics team traveled to Gainesville, Fla. on Friday to compete in a quadrangular meet against some stiff competition. Iowa State was up against three other teams ranked in the top 30, including Florida, Kentucky and Ball State. When it was all said and done, the eighth-rated Cyclones took second place, scoring a total team score of 195.075. The Cyclones topped Kentucky (193.700) and Ball State (193.500) while tenth-rated Florida won the meet, scoring 195.175. Iowa State is now 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference. Starting on the balance beam, the Cyclone charge was led by Sissy Huey. She tied Kentucky’s Mindy Smith for first place scoring 9.875. Cyclone Courtney Sarrett, who took first place last week against Minnesota, also placed in the event. The sophomore matched Jenny Crow of Florida for third place (9.850).ISU head coach K.J. Kindler said despite having essentially two falls in the event, the other teams had difficulty as well. “We had the highest beam score of the meet,” said Kindler. “It wasn’t our best beam performance of the year, but we still came out on top.” Florida’s Hilary Thompson won the floor exercise with a 9.975, but Huey was right behind her within a three-way tie for second place. The junior scored a 9.90 in the event, as did Kentucky’s Aronda Primault and Lindsey Miner of Florida. The high score tied a career high for Huey. Cyclone sophomore Karen Kuplicki, a Florida state champion in 1999, and Lauren Goldberg, led the team with vaults that Kindler described as “very dynamic.” Kuplicki was involved in a three-way tie for second place with Florida’s Miner and Teal Chiabotti. Kentucky’s Beth Coleman won the event. By the final rotation, the meet turned into a two-team race.Iowa State had the lead by 0.45 after Florida was forced to count a fall on the balance beam. The Cyclones headed to the uneven bars while Florida took to the floor exercise. Two Gators performed nearly flawless routines, leading Florida to a 49.325 team score to overcome the deficit. Iowa State got another strong performance from Huey on the bars. She took second with a score of 9.875 behind Florida’s Erin Pendleton (9.900). Senior co-captain Jessy Smith also stepped in for Iowa State, tying for fourth place with a score of 9.875. Huey took first place in the all-around, scoring a total of 39.235. Florida’s Kara Waterhouse and Thompson separated Huey from Smith, who took fourth in the final all-around placings (38.975). Kindler said she gave credit to the Gators for putting up a good fight. “They are an excellent team — one of the best we’ve seen skill-wise,” she said. “I think they are underrated.” Kuplicki said it was one of the best performances against Florida she has seen. “We came close,” she said. “It’s the closest we’ve ever been to them. Our little mistakes added up.” The overall team score was lower than average for Iowa State. After scoring 196.150 in the team’s last meet against Minnesota, Iowa State struggled to break 195.0. Accordingly, the Cyclones dropped two spots to 10th in the updated national rankings released Monday. “The scores were low, but they were low for everyone,” said Kuplicki. “For the most part, it was just a low-scoring meet.” The Cyclone gymnasts are scheduled to compete in back-to-back meets against Missouri and Nebraska.Kindler said that the Cyclones’ goal against Missouri will be a team score of 197.00 or above.Iowa State will host the Tigers, a team it defeated three weeks ago, at 2 p.m. Sunday before traveling to Lincoln to take on the Huskers Monday night.
