A Cyclone win tonight at Texas Tech would mark the 300th victory of ISU head coach Bill Fennelly’s career.More importantly for Fennelly and the No. 9 Cyclones (12-3 Big 12/ 22-4 overall), this game will represent a NCAA tournament style opponent in a tournament style atmosphere.”[Texas Tech is] the kind of team that can show us everything,” Fennelly said. “Good defense, some shooters, good post play; it’s the kind of team you’re gonna see in the tournament.”Fennelly said all the opponents Iowa State faces in the Big 12 Tournament will likely be in the Big Dance.”From here on out, we’re playing NCAA tournament [caliber] games,” he said. “Tech’s gonna be in the tournament, everybody we play in the Big 12 tournament, probably barring an upset, is gonna be in the NCAA tournament.”Leading the way for the No. 13 Lady Raiders (12-3/ 21-5) is forward Plenette Pierson, who is averaging 14.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Pierson adds a great shooting percentage of .485 to make her a dangerous threat down low.The Cyclones will match up with a host of players that can hold their own in the paint. Center Angie Welle leads Iowa State in points and rebounds per game with 18.2 and 10.3 respectively. Iowa State’s all-time leading rebounder Megan Taylor is good for 14.4 ppg and 6.1 rpg along with Tracy Gahan’s 12.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.If Iowa State can pull off a victory in the United Spirit Arena, it will secure the second seed in the Big 12 tournament. If the Cyclones lose, they will slip to the third seed.”We’d like to have the two seed going in,” ISU point guard Lindsey Wilson said. “Every little thing helps. It’s a game game we want to win, even if it was for nothing.”Oklahoma has clinched the Big 12 regular-season title. The No. 8 Sooners have a 14-1 conference record. The only loss for Oklahoma came at the hands of Iowa State, 81-79 in Norman.Iowa State struggled in their last two road games, at Colorado and Kansas, both Cyclone losses. But the Cyclones have some quality road wins that have their confidence high going into tonight’s game.Iowa State has won at Iowa, NC State, Missouri and Nebraska.”Anybody who says we don’t win on the road doesn’t know a damn thing about our schedule,” Fennelly said. “We’ve lost four road games all year, and I think most people would think that’s pretty good.”Playing at Texas Tech will be a bit of a role-reversal for Iowa State as the Lady Raiders draw a large crowd, similar to the crowds at Iowa State. Fennelly said you have to play the game in sections to beat Tech.”When you play a team like Tech, who has such a big crowd, you gotta play media time-out to media time-out,” Fennelly said. “You know, just shorten the game as much as you can and not look at it as one big game, just try and shorten it and see how you’re doing.”Texas Tech holds a 3-2 advantage in the series, but Iowa State won big last season in Ames, 62-37. Iowa State has never won at Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders have lost twice at home this year, to Texas and Oklahoma, snapping a home court winning streak that spanned 40 games.”It does prove that they are beatable at home,” Fennelly said. “Not very often, but it can happen.”Wilson, who will be playing her first game at Texas Tech, is excited about the opportunity to go and play well.”We’re going down there to win,” she said. “I don’t think we’re going down there to just show up in front of a big crowd.”
