The Inter-Residence Hall Association will soon be able to access bills and legislation online, thanks to a program created by one of their own members.Jeremy Hayes, director of information technologies for IRHA, said there are no other online programs like the one he is designing, which will help parliament members prepare for their meetings.”It’s going to be a form where parliament members can submit forms and read through legislation online before the meetings,” he said. While no other online programs are currently using this process, Hayes said he thinks they will soon. He said he was unsure of when the new online legislation program will be up and running.”Definitely sometime this semester,” he said. “It’s something I have been working on for about a year now, off and on.”Parliament members can change their personal biography information and view old legislation on the present Web site, www.stuorg.iastate.edu/irha/. The new program will allow members to access current and new legislation the same way.”Bills are currently written by members of parliament and are presented to the vice president in paper form,” said IRHA President Paul Duncan. “The VP must then make copies for everyone, [which is] a time-consuming and costly process. The turnover can sometimes be days.” Duncan said he thinks introducing the online legislation to IRHA will help members in many ways.”This will tremendously benefit IRHA by cutting down on the time we spend writing legislation,” he said. “It will also eliminate a large chunk of our photocopying and administrative costs.”Duncan said money saved from the new program, about $300 in paper costs, would be put toward other projects.”We want to pump as much money as we can into Residence Hall week,” he said.Online legislation will also allow parliament members to deliver bills to others.”It will keep the VP focused on his or her duties instead of unnecessary office work,” Duncan said.
