Cyclone gymnasts lose close battle to No. 8 Huskers

The ISU women’s gymnastics team hung with eighth-rated Nebraska Friday night, trailing by a mere 0.1 heading into the final event. However, the Huskers prevailed by the score of 195.500-195.375, handing the Big 12 Champions their first conference loss of the season. The meet started out with a bit of controversy as a Nebraska gymnast fell on the uneven bars, but was allowed a redo after the thirty-second time limit had passed. According to ISU head coach K.J. Kindler, an athlete is only allowed a redo after the time limit if there is an equipment failure. “That was the most interesting thing from my standpoint,” Kindler said. In the Cyclones first event, Region Four champion Shelly Kringen gave Iowa State a boost on the vault, posting a score of 9.850 to tie Nebraska’s Alecia Ingram for first place. Kringen also placed second on the floor exercise (9.875) and third all-around with a 39.150.ISU junior Sissy Huey showed why she is the two-time Big 12 uneven bars champion, tying her career high with a 9.925 to place first in that event. She tied two more career highs on the vault (9.775) and in the all-around competition (39.275). Those two scores were good enough for fourth and second place, respectively. There was a three-way tie for first on the balance beam. Cyclone senior Jessy Smith and junior Stephanie Sweitzer joined Nebraska’s Amy Ringo by scoring a 9.825 for the honor. Iowa State avoided a fall on the beam, a good sign in the second meet of the season. With the meet practically tied, Iowa State had one last chance on the floor exercise. Two Cyclones, Lauren Goldberg and Smith, met the challenge and ended in another three-way tie on the event. They matched Nebraska’s Alecia Ingram for third place with a 9.850. “We weren’t really thinking about [the overall score],” said Smith. “We were all just thinking about staying together as a team and performing well.” The Cyclones bounced back from a loss at BYU last week to take the Huskers to the limit. Consistency was shown throughout the meet as Iowa State improved their overall score by almost four points. Kindler pointed out strong performances by Huey and Kringen as well as a commitment in practice as keys to the meet. “I was extremely proud of them,” she said. “They worked really hard last week.” Smith echoed her comments. “We kept a positive attitude all week,” she said.Iowa State fell to 0-2 on the season while the Huskers hiked their record to 3-1. The Cyclone gymnasts host a young but strong Auburn team at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
