Cyclones get their revenge

Angie Welle wore a huge grin with more than eight minutes to go in the game. Welle had a lot to smile about. She was on her way to nabbing her seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Most importantly, the Cyclones were set on avenging last season’s home loss to Kansas as they whirled past the scrappy Jayhawks, 67-48.The No. 7 Cyclones are now on an 11-game home win streak.”We didn’t play a great game tonight,” said ISU head coach Bill Fennelly, “but we played hard.”Iowa State was led by Welle and clutch shooting from senior guard Erica Haugen. Haugen scored three straight 3-pointers, for the Cyclones’ first nine points of the second half and sent Kansas reeling.”[Haugen] was the difference in the game,” Fennelly said.

She finished the game with 13 points.”My role, to me, is to play defense and shoot the open shot,” Haugen said. The Jayhawks were mired by poor shooting all-around as only Jaclyn Johnson was able to get anything going.Johnson finished the night with 21 points and eight rebounds, but Iowa State was able to keep Johnson’s teammates in check.”She’s really developed her game,” Fennelly said of Johnson, who was an all-Conference selection last year.Johnson showed her range by stepping out and nailing 15-foot jumpers. “I didn’t think she could make that shot last year,” Fennelly said.Fennelly added that the game plan was to get Johnson outside to keep her off the offensive boards.Brooke Reves, who had been averaging 15.1 points per game, scored only eight points, and was on the bench most of the first half with foul trouble.”Once you sit out that long in the first half, it’s hard to get back in the flow of things,” junior Tracy Gahan said.Gahan missed a double-double herself by one rebound. She finished with 10 points and nine boards.Kansas shot only 1-13 from beyond the 3-point arc and was in foul trouble throughout the game. Iowa State shot 29 free throws to the Jayhawks’ 11.”The free throw line was a big advantage [for Iowa State],” said KU Head Coach Marian Washington. “It’s difficult to establish anything when that many fouls are called.”The Cyclones had a balanced scoring attack, as five players scored in double figures. The Cyclones move to 3-0 in the Big 12 and 12-1 overall.
