Bad call, ESPN the Magazine

Jeremy Gustafson

ESPN the Magazine has been a little bit extreme with some of its articles and decisions. After all, they did have Saints running back Ricky Williams on the cover in a dress. But now they’ve done it.Gracing the cover is “the One” Randy Moss, and inside a reader can find “the Other One” Kobe Bryant. There is no doubt that these are great players at the top of their sports, but they aren’t the “Ones.”Let’s start with Bryant. Here is an athlete that every coach tells their students not to be. A self-centered, egotistic player who doesn’t want to pass the ball and disses his coach. Here’s a quote straight from the mouth of Mr. Bryant. “We have to know our strengths and weaknesses. I trust the team, I just trust myself more.”Now there’s a modest guy.If Kobe played on the Grizzlies, maybe he would have a case. But he plays with the Lakers, last year’s champs. This team has some guy they call Shaq, and sure Ray Charles is probably a better free-throw shooter, but Shaq dominates the paint.Pass the ball down low and Shaq will take care of the rest.Shaq has said recently he feels “like a token big man, like Luc Longley.” Ouch. And as if having good players is not enough, the Lakers have the best coach in the NBA, Zen-master Phil Jackson. In one instance, the Magazine goes on to tell of a play where Jackson called for a pick and roll. Kobe decided that he did not want to run that play. Instead, he drove to the basket.”I don’t need a pick to get a shooter open,” was the response Bryant gave. The Magazine goes on to talk about how this season the Lakers have almost lost as many games as they did last year. The Lakers are 25-12 through Jan. 16, not even first in their division.Yet they still glorify Bryant and say that Shaq should get used to the Lakers being Kobe’s team. If that is the case Shaq should get used to making more movies because his off-season will be longer.Kobe claims that instead of winning in five or seven games, this year will be “sweeps.” Yeah, right. As in the Lakers will be swept right out of the playoffs by a team that plays together, such as Sacramento. But enough about Kobe, let’s talk about Moss.First off, Moss is incredible, and is probably the best receiver in the league, but don’t say he is “the One” when he has not led his team to a Super Bowl.Sure the Vikings have about as good a defense as a fourth-grade team, but the Rams defense is pretty poor, and if you will recall, they won last year. The annual choke-job that is the Vikings is a given. First, second or third round, they will fail before the big game. Until Moss and his mates can end that string, he is not the best.Wasn’t it two or three issues ago that ESPN had Marshall Faulk of the Rams on the cover saying he is the best? I’d stick with Faulk. Even though the Rams made an early exit this year, they still walloped the Vikings in the regular season.Granted with no Moss, the Vikings are a wild-card team at best, but until Moss raises his game to the next level, he is simply the Anna Kournikova of football. Stylish and good, just never good enough.Try this ESPN – give athletes that deserve credit the credit. Put players like Jason Kidd, Chris Webber, or Tim Duncan as the players to watch in basketball. Try giving football players such as Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison some credit. What about the entire Ravens defense or maybe Eddie George? If ESPN insists on making players like Bryant and Moss their marquee players, why not give Derrick Coleman and Jim Kelly the all-time achievement awards.Don’t believe the hype ESPN, you know better. It’s time to give credit where credit is due and not just pick everyone else’s favorite choice.Jeremy Gustafson is a senior in journalism and mass communication from Ogden.
