Globetrotters ready to awe Ames

The Harlem Globetrotters 2001 tour rolls through Ames at 7 p.m..Hilton Coliseum will help the ball-twirling, striped-short-wearing cagers celebrate their 75th season of play against their long-time, overmatched opponent: The Washington Generals.”I’m expecting a good crowd,” Mark Miller said, director of contemporary programming for the Iowa State Center.The 30-man roster will play in more than 260 games in the United States and Canada before the 2001 Globetrotter tour concludes in mid-April.Aside from the game in Ames this evening, the team will play in Brookings, S.D. and Fort Wayne, Texas.In fact, according to the team’s Web site, this past Sunday in Hinckley, Ill. began a stretch for the Globetrotters of three games a day, everyday, until Jan. 28, when the team finally gets a sabbatical. But on the 29th, the strenuous pace will be resumed and carried on deep into March.This past fall, the Globetrotters played against Metro State College, the defending Division II national champions, Michigan State University, the Division I national champions, and Purdue University.The Globetrotters won tight games against Metro State and Purdue, but lost 72-68 to the Spartans. The loss snapped a 1,270 game winning streak for the Globetrotters – a streak that extended back to 1995.Former Colorado Buffalo standout Donnie Boyce was named co-Most Valuable Player of the three game tour stint. Boyce averaged 5.0 points, and 5.7 rebounds, while shooting .714-percent from the free throw line.The Globetrotters have been entertaining more than 120 million people in 115 different countries since 1927.Tickets are still available for tonight’s contest.
