Lighthouse Transitional Living, part of the Youth and Shelter Services Inc., 420 Kellogg Ave., has received a grant for $189,000 a year over a period of two years. The award is funded by the Iowa Department of Housing and Urban Development and is part of national $3.2 million grant received by the state for continued care programs, said Ray Benter, public information officer at Youth and Shelter Services in Ames.”YSS provides housing, training and counseling,” he said. Lighthouse, part of YSS, helps youths ages 16 to 21 and pregnant or parenting youths ages 16 to 25, Benter said.”The Lighthouse Program provides more long-term housing. It is the bridge between overnight shelter and permanent housing,” said Steve Dietz, program manager of the Iowa Department of Economic Development. “[It] also teaches people skills about living on their own,” he said.Benter said ISU students have also benefited from the program. “Many students find themselves in situations where they need help from YSS after they have been attending ISU,” he said, “and many other students begin attending ISU after they have been rehabilitated.”
