Shoe’s on other foot for Cyclones

Iowa State has to face the harsh reality of its first Big 12 loss, and things aren’t looking any easier on the horizon. A re-vamped Colorado Buffaloes team will stroll into Hilton Coliseum and ISU head coach Bill Fennelly knows that things won’t be any easier after the team lost 79-74 to unranked Baylor Wednesday night.”The shoe’s on the other foot,” Fennelly said. He explained that normally teams in the Big 12 mark Iowa State as a big game, but the Cyclones are looking at the Buffaloes as a test Saturday.”I said at Big 12 media day [Colorado] could challenge for the championship,” Fennelly said. “They are a very good team.”Colorado boasts an identical conference record with Iowa State at 5-1. But as Colorado has struggled over the past couple of years, they appear to be back in stride led by Mandy Nightingale, who is averaging 14.8 points per game. Britt Hartshorn adds 11.6 points and comes down with 7.2 boards per game.Iowa State will be looking for more ways to score, especially off the bench, where the Cyclones were outscored 21-5 against Baylor.”We need to get some offense from some additional people,” Fennelly explained.ISU’s leading scorer Angie Welle and all-Big 12 candidate Megan Taylor were both plagued with foul trouble against the Lady Bears.Fennelly said that “[foul trouble] is gonna happen on the road; it is an opportunity for other players to step up.”Fennelly also said it is hard to score with two of the team’s top players on the bench.”With [Welle] and Megan on the bench at the same time-we ended the half with those two sitting — it’s hard to generate offense,” Fennelly said.Turnovers played a big role in the game as the Cyclones committed 15 in the first half alone, leading to Baylor’s 18-point halftime lead.”[Fifteen] is our goal for the game,” Fennelly said, “let alone the first half.”The Cyclones ended the game with 20 turnovers.”We were very careless with the ball in the first half,” Fennelly said. “Our decision making was very poor.”Iowa State was led in scoring by Taylor, who had 22 points, while Welle added 16 despite both being in foul trouble. Taylor fouled out of the game. Danielle Crockrom led Baylor by notching a double-double. She scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both team highs for Baylor. The No. 7 Cyclones will be back on the court at 7 p.m. Saturday in Ames. Colorado has won nine of its last 10 games with its only loss during that span coming to Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma.”It’s a huge game for our team,” Fennelly said.
