Cyclones to play Global Sports

Head coach Larry Eustachy and his 25th-ranked Cyclones play host to Global Sports tonight at 7 in their second and final exhibition game of the season. Eustachy’s squad is fresh off a 85-72 downing of Global Sports One [Next Level] last Wednesday.

Last Wednesday’s game saw Iowa State in its first action without former all-American and NBA lottery pick Marcus Fizer. Stepping up in the absence of Fizer were senior Martin Rancik and sophomore Brandon Hawkins.

Rancik put up a team high 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting and was 4 of 4 from the line. He also pulled down 6 rebounds in 26 minutes of action.

Hawkins chipped in 12 points on 4 of 4 shooting from the field, and 4 of 5 shooting from the free throw line.

Hawkins’ most impressive stat, however, was his team-high six assists in what Eustachy said “was Brandon’s best game so far as a Cyclone.”

Tonight’s opponent, Global Sports, is 2-7 in its 9 exhibition appearances, which includes wins over Old Dominion and Tulane, and losses to Georgia, UNC-Charlotte, Wake Forest, LSU, Alabama, Southern Mississippi, and Auburn.

Brothers James and Schea Cotton highlight Global Sports’ lineup, which consists mostly of former college all-stars.

Schea is Global’s leading scorer at 12.8 ppg and was Alabama’s leading scorer last season (15.5) as a second-team all-SEC selection.

James played professionally for the Seattle Supersonics for two seasons, and is averaging 11.2 ppg.

They are joined by former Miami standout Kevin Norris and former Creighton big-man Doug Swenson, who standing at 6-10 is Global’s tallest player.

Norris is the team’s second leading scorer at 11.3 ppg and Swenson is averaging 3.6 ppg and 2.3 rpg.

Former George Washington player Kwame Evans has been good for 9 points and 2 rebounds per game, and is another big name on a Global Sports team that is averaging 78.0 ppg.

Along with giving the starters a final tune-up before their Nov. 21 season opener against Morningside, tonight’s contest will give Eustachy and his staff the opportunity to work newcomers Jake Sullivan, Shane Power, and Tyray Pearson into the game for a few minutes.

Sullivan and Power will be looked to for perimeter scoring, and Pearson post defense and rebounding.
