Delayed WB expected before the new year

Mother Nature has caused further postponement in the launch of a fifth network affiliate in the Ames area. The Warner Brothers WB channel, slated to arrive Nov. 20 on channel 23, has been delayed due to weather conditions, said KPWB Des Moines manager Deb Corson.

“We’ve had bad weather trying to get the tower completed,” Corson said of the 2,000 foot signal tower under construction 15 miles south of Ames in Alleman.

Corson said 99 percent of the job is finished and the remaining tasks including mounting the antennae on the top of the tower and bringing down the crane used for construction. She said this will take about 10 working days to complete. However, predicting a completion date is almost impossible due to the unpredictability of the weather.

“We’re hoping mid-December, but there’s no way to know how many good days we’ll have,” she explained.

Many viewers are waiting to tune into the new station.

“We’ve gotten a lot of phone calls from people anxious for us to be on the air, and we’re sorry we’re taking so long,” Corson said.

Some ISU students are also looking forward to the arrival of the WB.

Jessica Selleck, sophomore in political science, said she heard the network is coming and is looking forward to watching shows like “Charmed” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”

Selleck said the station will be popular with the college set.

“A lot of my friends I know said they are waiting for it to come, and are looking forward to seeing shows that they can’t watch now,” she said.

Jenny Bader, senior in accounting, said she did not know the WB will soon reach Ames, but said she will probably tune into shows she has watched in the past such as “Dawson’s Creek,” “Jack and Jill” and “Seventh Heaven.”

“It’d be nice to have it,” she said.

Still, not everyone is anticipating the WB’s arrival. Derek Kastner, sophomore in computer science, said his television is on almost all the time but he would rather tune into cable stations such as Comedy Central and MTV than the WB.

“My sister’s had it on and the shows don’t look that great,” he said.
