Cyclone hockey gets sweep against Colorado State Rams

Iowa State hockey collected two wins this weekend, beating the Colorado State Rams by a score of 9-2 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday night.

After Friday’s blowout, the Rams came back on Saturday to give the Cyclones a closer contest.

Iowa State drew first blood on Saturday, when Mark Krueger scored on assists from wingers Glen Detulleo and Nat Little with 11:42 left in the period. Less than two minutes later, the Cyclones scored again, increasing the lead to 2-0.

The Rams scored their first goal on a short-handed breakaway at the 6:43 mark.

The Rams added two more goals in the period, heading to the locker room with a 3-2 lead.

Neither team tallied a goal in the second period and Cyclone coach Al Murdoch attributed the scoreless period to goaltending on both ends.

“Phil Popp did an outstanding job in net. I believe he had 20 saves in the third period, and that’s just excellent goaltending,” Murdoch said.

Iowa State took control of the game in the third period by scoring three goals to seal the win and the weekend sweep.

Iowa State got things started with a goal by defenseman Tony Infusino on an assist from linemate Jason McCollum at the 14:14 mark.

Minutes later Iowa State added the go-ahead goal, but not without controversy, when Jeremy Meyer scored his second of the night with 11:00 to go.

At first, the referee was clearly seen waving the goal off, as a result of the net being pushed off its moorings.

After reviewing the goal, the referee ruled that it counted, because the net was pushed off by a Colorado State player.

Iowa State added to the lead by scoring once more with 1:40 left in the final period.

Team captain Glen Detulleo scored on assists from Nat Little and Tony Infusino to win the game by a score of 5-3.

Murdoch was pleased with the win, and the fan turnout at the game.

“I always consider our crowd as a main advantage. We’ve got great fans, and we love their support,” Murdoch said.

The Cyclones are on the road next weekend against St. Louis University but will be back home on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 against Kent State and Ohio University.
