The ISU volleyball team continued to add to its losing streak of 15 matches dropping a 3-0 decision to Oklahoma Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The loss dropped the Cyclones to 2-22 overall with a 0-15 mark in Big 12 action. The Sooners upped their record to 7-15 overall with 2-12 record in the conference. The Sooners two lone conference wins came at the hands of the Cyclones, with the first one coming earlier in the season in Norman.

Game one started slowly with Oklahoma using solid blocking to jump to a 7-0 lead. Iowa State was able to answer back with a kill by outside hitter Sarah Rollman to get the Cyclones on the board but Oklahoma pushed the lead to 10-2 before Iowa State countered with a small rally to get back to within five points, 12-7.

The Sooners scored the next three points to take the game, 15-7.

The Cyclones got out a little quicker in game two, going ahead 5-3, before the Sooners countered with their attack led by senior middle blocker Cathy Cook who recorded a game leading 14 kills for the Sooners.

The Cyclones were unable to stop the momentum and ended up falling by a score of 15-7.

Game three proved to be the most competitive in the match and saw Iowa State race out to a 8-3 lead. The Sooners scored two quick points to come within three before the Cyclones were forced to take a timeout to stop the attack.

Iowa State came out of the timeout and got the sideout but was unable to hold possession and watched as Oklahoma rallied off four straight points to take the lead for good. The Cyclones never scored again on the way to the 15-8 defeat.

“There was some stretches in there where we did some good things especially in game three but overall my reaction to the match is disappointment,” ISUHead Volleyball Coach Linda Grensing said. “I think we just didn’t take advantage of an opportunity that I think was a good chance for us to at least go five games with a team like Oklahoma.”

Grensing said that she was disappointed in the fact that the Sooners took two matches from the Cyclones this season.

“That’s a team that we should at least win that match at home and have them win the match when we play them there,” she said. “I guess I’m disappointed in that we didn’t come as fighters and take advantage of the opportunity that realistically we had a chance to win.”

Nanette Allen lead the Cyclone attack with 15 kills on the night. The match marked the sixth time this season that Allen has lead Iowa State in kills.

“I thought Nanette Allen did a great job of coming in off the bench, and she had probably one of her best matches of the entire year,” Grensing said. “I think that she should be given a lot of credit for the way she came in, took big aggressive swings and played a nice match.”

Rollman added another strong performance for the Cyclones totaling 10 kills and eight digs on the night.

“Sarah Rollman played a solid match the entire time,” Grensing said. “She was very much of a leader, and I think the kind of presence she had on the court today is exactly what I’m talking about in terms of what we need each person to step up to.”

The Cyclones continue the second half of the Big 12 season Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Colorado.

“We need to improve on that fight and determination where we just have to understand to be competitive in the Big 12,” Grensing said. “We have to be competitive every night regardless of who we’re playing or how the first few points go.”
