Cyclone women feast on their opposition over break

If the Cyclones long break left them rusty before their first game against Iowa, Angie Welle and Tracy Gahan didn’t show it.

The duo powered Iowa State past the in-state rival Hawkeyes, 86-76 last Wednesday.

Welle shot 12-13 from the floor and scored 27 points while collecting 15 rebounds.

Gahan nearly matched Welle in both categories, as she nailed a career high 26 points and matched her career best with 14 boards.

“The past two years [head coach Bill Fennelly] is always on me that I gotta keep shooting more, I turned down a lot of open shots,” Gahan said. “Hopefully this year he won’t have to keep yelling at me for the same thing.”

Gahan made 10 of her 14 shots, and overall the Cyclones shot nearly 59 percent from the field.

Iowa State helped its shooting percentage by making 14 lay-ups, all by Welle and Gahan.

One area the Cyclones struggled in was three-point shooting. Iowa State was 2-17 from beyond the arc, a rate of 12 percent.

“We were a three-point shooting team tonight, not a making team,” Fennelly said.

Point guard Lindsey Wilson was the only other ISU player to score in double-digits with 10. Wilson added four assists and six turnovers.

“I think it was just the first game [and we were nervous],” Wilson said.

The bigger problem for Iowa State was what to do when Welle was out of the game.

Iowa went on a 7-0 scoring run at one point with Welle on the bench. Freshman center Kate Bauman played back-up to Welle but was in the game for only one minute.

Senior center Gintare Cipinyte didn’t play at all.

Fennelly said it was a “good question” when asked what he would do with Welle out of the game.

“If I had the answer I’d tell you,” Fennelly said. “Right now we don’t have an answer to that.”

Iowa never led in the game, but also never let Iowa State pull too far ahead. The Hawkeyes pulled to within six with just under five minutes to play in the game on a lay-up by senior center Randi Peterson.

After a time-out, the Cyclones slammed the door on the Hawkeyes as senior Erica Haugen nailed a three-pointer to put Iowa State ahead by nine.

Haugen had both of Iowa State’s three pointers and scored eight points on the night.

The Hawkeyes were led in scoring by junior guard Lindsey Meder. Meder scored 23 points in 36 minutes of play. Freshman Jennie Lillis added 17 for the Hawks and led the team with seven rebounds.

Iowa State out-rebounded the Hawks 44-36 as it won its fourth straight game against Iowa.
