Students escape to warmer weather

Instead of staying in possible blizzard-like weather in Iowa, some ISU students are using this year’s winter break to travel throughout the nation and even the world.Katie Theisen, senior in environmental science, said she hopes to use some of what she has learned at school on her vacation to Australia and the Fiji Islands.”I am very excited to visit another culture and see another ecosystem,” Theisen said. “Traveling, meeting new people, and the cultural experience are all important parts of learning.”Theisen will meet her boyfriend, who studied abroad in Australia this semester, to travel from Sydney to Brisbane. They will snorkel and visit parks and attractions along the way, she said.Ashley Klemme, travel consultant with Council Travel, 2526 Lincoln Way, said many students have holiday plans that include traveling to another country.”It is a reasonable price to fly to Europe now,” Klemme said. “It isn’t the best weather there in the winter, but it’s cheaper then the Caribbean or Hawaii. As you go to warmer spots the prices to fly there go up when it’s cold here.”Klemme said some students take advantage of the chance to go to Europe, especially London, Paris, Rome and Madrid. She said students go there because of the prices, the ticket flexibility and the learning experience.Ryan Hawkins, sophomore in construction engineering, hopes to spend his holiday somewhere far from Iowa.Hawkins said he will be showing his school spirit along with other ISU students if the ISU football team makes it to a bowl game.”My dad and I have had a standing agreement that we would go to a bowl game when ISU made it,” Hawkins said. “We have been waiting 10 years to get the opportunity to watch the Cyclones play in a bowl game.”Hawkins, who said he has been a Cyclone fan all his life, is hoping for a victory at the game.”I definitely encourage all to go to the game to support the team,” Hawkins said. “The Cyclones have endured a lot over the past few years, and now is the time to watch them play some good ball.”
