A soccer split over the weekend notched ISU’s first Big 12 win of the season. The Cyclones lost to Kansas 3-1 on Friday, but bounced back Sunday to beat Missouri 1-0. The team traveled to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the 5-5 Jayhawks at the SuperTarget Field. The Jayhawks wasted no time as they sprinted out to a three goal advantage. All of the goals were scored within an eight-minute span. The first Jayhawk goal was netted by Lindsay Horner at the 15-minute mark, and then 15 seconds later Carmel Kaplinger scored. The final Kansas goal of the half was scored in the 23rd minute by Colleen Colvin. In the second half Iowa State was able to shut down the Jayhawk offense, but could only muster one goal. The lone ISU score was an unassisted goal by Katie Antongiovanni in the 83rd minute. The goal ended a scoreless drought for the Cyclones that dated back to a 2-1 loss at South Carolina on Sept. 17. Iowa State was able to outshoot Kansas 12-9, but seven saves by the Kansas goalkeeper shutdown the Cyclone attack. The loss extended the Cyclone skid to four games. On Sunday Iowa State headed to Missouri to take on their Big 12 rival with hopes to turn things around. Iowa State hadn’t beaten the Tigers in over three years dating back to a 4-3 double overtime victory in `97. The first half ended with Missouri taking a three-shot advantage over the Cyclones into the break of a 0-0 game. Iowa State came out kicking in the second half with a clear 10-5 shot advantage over Mizzou. Finally, in the 69th minute, freshman Jill Borcherding broke loose and sent in her first collegiate goal, which later stood to be the game winner. ISU goalkeeper Elizabeth Chapman made three saves in the match, en route to her fifth shutout of the season. With the win over the Tigers, the Cyclones moved to 5-5-1 overall, and 1-2 in the Big 12. After struggling to a 3-5 road record, Iowa State will return to Ames where they are 2-0-1, for a four game stretch. The Cyclones’ last home game was nearly a month ago, when Iowa State beat Iowa 2-0 on Sept. 8. Big 12 foe Texas A&M, rated eighth, will travel to Ames to take on the Cyclones Wednesday at the ISU Soccer Complex starting at 4 p.m..
