Program will feature ISU prof

An ISU professor and his research once again will be the subject of national attention.

Brad Bushman, associate professor of psychology, will be appearing on “Rage to Revenge,” a Discovery Channel program which will air at 8 p.m. on Nov. 15.

“The United States by far is the most violent and aggressive nation in the world,” Bushman said. “[I hope] my research will help us see how this [aggression] develops.”

Bushman said his research examines the causes and consequences of human aggression, violent media and social influence.

He said the study has also been featured in the Journal on Personal and Social Psychology.

“[Bushman is] highly respected in the department and national,” said Craig Anderson, professor and chairman of psychology. “He’s a good contributor and an important piece of the department.”

Anderson said Bushman also was featured two years ago during two programs on aggression and self-esteem for ABC’s news magazine “20/20.”

“It’s always great when faculty are featured on programs like this,” said David Gieseke, public relations director for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “It’s great for the institution.”

Bushman said he does these programs because scientists disseminate knowledge and “the more people know, the better.”

The time commitments for these appearances forces Bushman to miss classes and opportunities to conduct research, but he said he feels it is all worthwhile if he has helped even one person.

Bushman said one of the main ways people can help manage stress is by slowing down.

“If venting anger doesn’t work [for daily hassles], then delay,” he said.

Practicing delay could be counting to ten, relaxing with deep breaths, listening to music, helping someone in need or watching a comedy, Bushman said.

“Laughter often helps people to cool down,” he said.
