Huskers cruise past Cyclone volleyball

The Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team continued their dominance over the Cyclones on their way to posting a 3-0 sweep Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.

The Huskers pushed their all-time record vs. Iowa State to a decisive 57-0 advantage.

The win raised Nebraska’s season record to 15-0 with a 7-0 conference record.

The Cyclones dropped to 2-13 and 0-8 in the Big 12.

The Cornhuskers, currently ranked number one in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches poll, supported their record and ranking by downing the Cyclones 15-0, 15-5, 15-4.

Iowa State Head Coach Linda Grensing choose to look at the positives in the match instead of focusing on the loss.

“I think it is a good learning experience for us,” Grensing said. “A lot of kids choose to play in the Big 12 because they want to meet up with a good team like Nebraska. That’s the kind of competition we want.”

Sunday’s game boasted the largest crowd of the year due to Nebraska’s prominence in volleyball and number one ranking. More than 1,000 spectators were in attendance.

Due to the large number of Nebraskans in Ames for the Cyclone/Husker football game, Husker fans outnumbered ISU fans, and cheered Nebraska on to the 15-0 first-game shutout.

Iowa State started off stronger in the next game scoring a few early points before succumbing to Nebraska’s dominating play, 15-5.

“I think just in terms of the difference of how we played Nebraska this year compared to last year, we’re a few points better, which is a good indication of how much we’ve improved,” said Coach Grensing. “Nebraska is a much better team than they were last year and we’re a couple points better on them, so it’s a good learning experience for us.”

Game three went much like the first two with Nebraska clearly having the edge.

The Cyclones were able to score a few early points, but once the Cornhuskers gained momentum, they cruised to the 15-4 win and the 3-0 match victory.

Senior Stacy Nicks was again the main offensive threat for Iowa State, recording seven kills for a .400 hitting percentage.

Sophomores Sarah Rollman and Mandi Harms combined for 13 kills in the loss while Harms led the way on the defensive end with six digs.

Freshmen setter Lindsey Chapman paced the offense with 20 assists.

Nicks came out of the loss impressed with the way Nebraska played.

“They played very even,” she said. “They don’t make a lot of mistakes and they don’t make a lot of errors. They played like a machine out there.”

The Huskers lead the country in blocking with 3.9 blocks per game.

Sunday afternoon’s match proved to be no different with Nebraska outblocking Iowa State 9-2.

Coming off their best offensive performance of the season, hitting an incredible .567 from the floor in a game vs. Creighton, Nebraska continued its hot streak totaling 48 kills to the Cyclones’ 23.

The next action for Iowa State will be on Oct. 11 when the Cyclones will meet the Northern Iowa Panthers in a match at Hilton.

“We’re getting better with every game and it’s definitely a learning experience,” Nicks said.

She said she expects the team will improve into the season.

“We have good girls in the freshmen, but they don’t know what it’s like yet. As we play good teams, that will improve,” Nicks said.
