ISU volleyball travels to Oklahoma tonight

The ISU volleyball team will attempt to record its first conference win tonight when they take on the Oklahoma Sooners at the Oklahoma University Fieldhouse in Norman, Okla. Iowa State travels to Oklahoma University for their second conference road game of the season, where they’ll try to add one more loss to the Sooners current six-match losing streak. Oklahoma started off the season strong with five-straight victories, but have dropped the last six, including being swept by Nebraska on Saturday, 15-5, 15-6, and 15-3. The Cyclones bring their 2-9 record with a 0-4 clip in conference play into Norman, while the Sooners are also winless in Big 12 action with a 0-3 mark, 5-6 overall record. ISU Head Coach Linda Grensing has been seeing improvement from match to match and thinks these improvements will play a large role in how the team fares tonight. “One thing I see improving is our first contacts,” she said. “I think they’ve gotten much better. Our passing has been more consistent and our first balls have been looking much better.” Grensing describes Oklahoma as a team somewhere between last week’s opponents Missouri and Kansas. Both the Tigers and Jayhawks brought impressive records of 10-1 and 10-2 into the matches. Senior Cathy Cook leads the Sooners offensively with 168 kills for a .345 hitting percentage, while defensively, blocker Holly McMillan controls the middle with 32 blocks on the season. Setter Carolyn Kittle has totaled 425 assists and also leads the team in digs with 71. Senior Stacy Nicks has been coming on strong for the Cyclones in the last few weeks and led the way offensively and defensively in the last match vs Kansas recording 10 kills at a .304 clip while adding two blocks from her middle blocker position. Nicks has been Iowa State’s leader in kills in six out of the eleven matches. Sophomore Sarah Rollman and junior Nanette Allen are also putting out steady performances this season as both are on the verge of going over the century mark in both kills and digs. Rollman currently has 82 kills and a team-leading 95 digs, while Allen has added 90 kills and 88 digs from her outside-hitter position. The Sooners come into tonight’s match with a 28-15 advantage in the all-time series. Oklahoma swept both matches last season recording 3-0 victories in each. Iowa State last came away with a victory over the Sooners on Oct. 17, 1998, when they recorded a 3-1 win and their first conference victory of the year. Iowa State is hoping to accomplish the same feat this season. Freshmen outside-hitter Steph Suntken thinks the Cyclones have an opportunity to do just that come 7 p.m. “Linda (Grensing) just talked about how these are very doable games for us,” said Suntken. “We just have to keep going, and sometime we’re going to get the win. We’re just going to go after them.”
