ISU men’s golf team opened its season Monday at the Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational with a 12th place finish and 54-hole score of 930. The two-day meet took place at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.. Leading the team at the invitational were sophomores Matt Gatchel and Josh Clay. Gatchel fired a team low of +12 taking 15th place, while teammate Clay shot +16 for a tie at 33rd. Aaron Patton and Jamie Faidley both shot +26 for a 57th place finish, and Greg Stephanson ended up 66th with a +35. The Cyclones are extremely youthful, and with youth comes a lot of inexperience. Over half the team is made up of sophomores and only two upper classmen. The meet also marked Coach Jay Horton’s debut as head coach. Last year Coach Horton found himself moving from an assistant coaching position to interim head coach. Then in the spring, Horton was finally named head coach. Sam Houston State University took first claiming the team title, while Missouri and UNC-Charlotte finished second and third respectively. Kansas State Wildcat Brian Milberger took home the gold with his meet effort of +1. Only a stroke off the leader, SHS’s Jon Antunes finished in second place. Three strokes off Antunes were Jeff Curl of UNC-Charlotte and Ryan Polzin of SHS. Both finished at +5 for a tie at third place. The Cyclones will be the Weibring Invitational in Normal, Ill., on Sept. 18-19.
