ISU volleyball started out its season this weekend with a few highlights, and even more importantly, its first win of the season. The Cyclones went 1-2 in the Heritage Classic that served as the opening tournament for ISU in a still early 2000 season. In the opening round on Friday night, the Cyclones met Creighton with a chance to begin the season with a win. Creighton proved too powerful, racing out to a 15-0 first set win. The Bluejays didn’t look back on their way to a 3-0 sweep over Iowa State, 15-0, 15-12, 15-9. Hitting proved to be the difference in the match, with Creighton slamming down 34 kills to the Cyclones’ 23. Creighton’s solid .412 hitting percentage from the floor in the first game paced its win while Iowa State couldn’t get anything started hitting for a -.130 average in game one. Junior Nanette Allen led the Cyclones with nine kills and 11 digs while sophomore Sarah Rollman added six kills and six digs. “We were pretty anxious coming out,” said head coach Linda Grensing. “I liked the fact that they settled down and played better in games one and two. We are a young team, so we are going to go through growing pains.” Earlier in the night, Idaho swept UNC-Greensboro, 3-0. With one match already under their belt, the Cyclones came out Saturday morning a little stronger. Senior Stacy Nicks paced the attack vs UNC-Greensboro hitting an impressive .400 percentage from the floor on her way to 15 kills and four blocks. Nicks attack helped Iowa State to a .235 hitting percentage for the match on the way to a 3-1 win, 15-9, 15-3, 12-15, 15-4. Rollman also had an impressive match collecting 12 kills and a team-high 12 digs. The win improved the Cyclone record to 1-1 on the tournament while UNC-Greensboro dropped to 0-2 with the loss. In the noon match, Creighton and Idaho battled before Creighton pulled away for the 3-2 victory, 11-15, 15-9, 5-15, 15-13, 19-17. Creighton also played in the next match. Losing the first set to UNC-Greensboro 12-15 before winning the next three for the 3-1 match win. The final round of the Classic saw Iowa State fall to the Vandals of Idaho, 7-15, 10-15, 5-15. Idaho out hit the Cyclones .269 to -.071 en route to their 45 kills. The Vandals win improved its record to 2-1 on the season while the Cyclones dropped to 1-2. Rollman again had the hot hand with 11 kills and two digs, while Allen added nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore Sarah Stribe added four kills, 19 assists, and a team-high nine digs to help out defensively. One highlight of the weekend was Rollman being named to the All-Tournament team along with Becky Moore of UNC-Greensboro, Jenny Kniss of Idaho, Heather Kniss of Idaho, Kailey Reyes of Creighton and Melissa Walsh of Creighton, who was also named the MVP of the Heritage Classic. “This tournament was a good test for us to face different competition in order to get ready for the Big 12,” Grensing said. “I saw some chemistry and solidity in today’s [Saturday’s] matches that was missing yesterday, which is a positive step.” Next action for the Cyclones will be when they travel to Wichita State next weekend to participate in the Wichita State Tournament.
