DPS looks for connection in thefts

The ISU Department of Public Safety is looking for a possible connection between a rash of computer equipment thefts over the summer. Aaron Delashmutt, DPS patrol officer in investigations, said there is a possibility the thefts could be related. He said about $30,000 in computer equipment has been stolen from Iowa State since January. “Every summer we get thefts,” Delashmutt said. “This [summer] is definitely more than usual.” The locations and modes of entry are some of the factors that will be considered to determine if the incidents are connected, Delashmutt said. Six separate incidents of theft were reported to DPS on May 8, June 6, June 7, June 20, June 21 and July 17, from six different campus locations. Charm Brazie, secretary in landscape architecture, said about $3,000 worth of computer equipment has been missing from a studio in the College of Design since June 6. “I wish there was some way we could figure it out,” she said. “I’d like to have the computer back.” This was the first time a computer from landscape architecture was stolen, Brazie said. Martha Isaacson, administrative specialist in agronomy, said the Agronomy department is also short on some necessary computer equipment after about $3,400 worth of equipment was reported stolen from 2408 Agronomy Hall on July 17. “We’re always very concerned about keeping lab spaces locked,” Isaacson said. “In our computer labs we try to do things to prevent such occurrences, but [theft is] not possible to fully prevent.” Isaacson said she is relying on DPS to investigate and find the person or persons responsible for the missing equipment and punish them. “We try to do what’s responsible, but we’re not investigators,” Isaacson said. In the past, mouses, keyboards and laptops have been stolen from Agronomy Hall, Isaacson said. Brazie said most of her department’s equipment will be replaced, but not without cost. “It’s hard to find money to replace it,” Brazie said.
