Get the facts right

To the editor:

In response to the “NCAA Snubbery?” column in Monday’s sports section, I assume it was written by someone who knows little about college basketball.

Since when was there a Pac-10 tournament? Every year there is a debate as to why the Pac-10 doesn’t have a tournament. If you know of some underground Pac-10 tournament, I’m sure thousands of sports writers and the NCAA would be interested in when and where it is played.

Even though you slipped on that whole Pac-10 thing, how can you screw up our own team’s facts? Iowa State’s record against ranked opponents is not 5-2. Let’s do a quick count in victories: Kansas (Twice), Oklahoma State (Twice), Texas and Oklahoma. That adds up to 6-2. And when comparing records, it usually makes sense to compare the same amount of games and/or time frame.

Do you really think Iowa State got snubbed by receiving the No. 2 seed in the Midwest? Would you rather have the team be a No. 1 seed and playing in Salt Lake City or Birmingham?

The committee rewarded Iowa State and its fans by placing the team in Minneapolis, a mere three hours from home. Even though Cyclone fans will follow the team anywhere, the committee knew the best chance at recreating Hilton Magic would be in Minneapolis.

Does seeding really matter? If it did, Stanford, Arizona, Temple, St. John’s and Cincinnati would still be in the tournament. The teams that deserve to win, will win and those who don’t will lose. Next time, try to use some logic and research to obtain some facts when writing your articles.
