Cyclone men will tangle with Baylor

Rematch, anyone? When Iowa State takes on the Baylor Bears today at noon, it will be the second time the Cyclones will suit up against Baylor in 6 days.

The Bears defeated Nebraska Thursday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals of the men’s Big 12 Tournament.

They will take on Iowa State, who is seeded first for the only time in school history.

These teams met Saturday night in Waco, where the Cyclones used a dominating performance by Marcus Fizer to get the win.

The victory was huge for Iowa State, as it clinched the first conference title for the school since 1945.

ISU coach Larry Eustachy is taking a laid-back approach to the tournament.

“We already accomplished what we set out to do. Anything from here on out is icing on the cake,” Eustachy said.

On the other hand, Eustachy feels that the tournament can be beneficial to his team.

“We are playing to win the tournament, don’t get me wrong. We’re also playing for seeds in the NCAA tournament. But I’d really like our bench to get more time in these games,” Eustachy said.

Iowa State relies on its five starters more than any team in the league, and while it hasn’t caught up to them yet, Eustachy wants to make sure his team is prepared for March Madness as much as possible.

“We need to be able to go a little deeper. Quite honestly, I haven’t felt comfortable putting guys like Brandon Hawkins or Martin Rancik in key situations. But I want to do that this weekend, especially with Martin,” Eustachy said.

Eustachy said there are different reasons for his hesitancy with the players off the bench.

“With Brandon, it’s just that he’s a freshman. He’s so young. And Martin, coming back with the foot injury, it’s tough to throw him right into the fire too,” Eustachy said.

Iowa State looks like it will have forward Paul Shirley back into the mix soon. Shirley, who broke his foot in Iowa State’s game against Texas, is determined to play again, but Eustachy said he might have to wait until the NCAA Tournament.

Providing they are not upset by Baylor, the Cyclones will take on the winner of the Oklahoma State-Kansas game on Saturday.
