Women’s Big 12 Tournament a wide-open race

While the ISU men have seen a large role reversal from last season’s Big 12 Tournament, the ISU women will enter the field with the same goal as last season: to win.

A year ago, the Cyclones fell just short, losing to Texas Tech 73-59 in the finals.

Iowa State held a 28-14 lead at one point in the first half and led by five at the half. But the Red Raiders came back to show their clear superiority over the rest of the field with a big win.

This year, there is no clear-cut favorite to win the crown.

The three-team deadlock at the top of the conference demonstrates this.

Iowa State, which earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of beating Texas Tech and Oklahoma, will play its first game against an opponent not yet determined Wednesday at noon.

Texas Tech has secured the No. 2 seed.

The Red Raiders completed the season with a record of 24-3 overall.

ISU defeated Texas Tech by a score of 74-49 in the first conference game of the season.

The third of the championship triumvirate is Oklahoma. The Cyclones beat Oklahoma to give the Sooners their first conference loss on February 8.

The fourth seed will be the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas is the team the Cyclones have struggled most with this season.

The Jayhawks handed Iowa State its first conference home loss in over three seasons, defeating Iowa State 79-71.

They also beat the Cyclones in Lawrence by a score of 58-49.

The fifth seed in the tournament will be Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers, who ended regular season play with marks of 16-11 overall and 10-6 in the Big 12, lost both games they played against Iowa State.

Providing the Cyclones can win their game in the quarterfinals, Iowa State will face the Nebraska-Kansas winner in the semifinals.

The sixth seed will be Texas, the team Iowa State recently beat to gain a share of the conference crown.

Missouri, a team the Cyclones defeated twice this season, including a 101-66 thrashing in late February, will take the seventh seed in the tournament.

Kansas State will be seeded eighth.

The Wildcats gave Iowa State problems this year, as Iowa State defeated Kansas State by three at home. The Cyclones fell in Manhattan to even the season series.

Oklahoma State will face Kansas State in the first round. Iowa State defeated Oklahoma State with ease on the road in Stillwater.

The winner of the Kansas State-Oklahoma State game will be Iowa State’s first opponent.

The game will be played Wednesday at noon.

Colorado will be the tenth seed. The Cyclones rolled over the Buffs both times the teams faced in the 1999-2000 campaign.

Texas A&M, a team Iowa State beat late in the season, will be the eleventh seed, while Baylor rounds out the field at No. 12.
