Three Cyclones honored in Big 12 Coaches awards

Following the conclusion of the most successful regular season in Iowa State basketball history, awards have been coming in at a steady pace for members of the Cyclone teams.

Wednesday coach Larry Eustachy picked up the second in what no doubt will be a long procession of coach of the year awards as he won the Big 12 Coaches Coach of the Year honor.

And in a move that surprised no one, Marcus Fizer won the Player of the Year Award, picking up all possible votes in the process.

Fizer averaged 24.8 points in conference play, and 24.8 overall. He won the Big 12 Player of the Week Award four times, including the last two weeks of the conference season.

In his last five games, Fizer has scored at least 29 points, and he is averaging 32.6 points during the run.

“He’s a different person this year. He’s stronger, a better shooter and a leader,” Eustachy said.

Fizer has been named as a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, given annually to the nation’s top player.

But it didn’t stop there. Jamaal Tinsley, who in addition to being named to the All-Big 12 second team, picked up the Newcomer of the Year honor.

Tinsley has been instrumental to Iowa State’s success this year. The junior point guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., has averaged 6.6 assists this season, good for second in the Big 12.

He also is third in the league with 2.5 steals per game and averages 10.2 points per game this season.

“Jamaal is a great story. He has a huge impact on winning. I’ve never had a player who creates as much havoc as Jamaal does,” Eustachy said.

Michael Nurse, who garnered third-team All-Big 12 honors from the Associated Press, made honorable mention in the coaches’ vote.

Replacing Tinsley on the first team was Jaquay Walls, who scored a career-high 42 points in Colorado’s overtime win against Iowa State Feb. 19.

Along with Fizer, Eduardo Najera of Oklahoma, Chris Mihm of Texas, and Desmond Mason of Oklahoma State joined Walls.

The second team includes Kenny Gregory of Kansas, Keyon Dooling of Missouri, Gabe Muoneke of Texas, Rayford Young of Texas Tech, and Tinsley.

The third team included Jamahl Mosley of Colorado, Clarence Gilbert of Missouri, Kimani Ffriend of Nebraska, J.R. Raymond of Oklahoma, Brian Montonati of Oklahoma State, and Bernard King, the only freshman to appear on any of the teams, from Texas A&M.

There was a tie in the voting for Freshman of the Year, as King and Missouri sensation Kareem Rush tied for first.

Rush was suspended for 12 games in the middle of the season but eventually returned to score 18.2 points per game in conference play.

Big 12 Tournament play kicks off today when four games are on the slate.

Baylor and Nebraska will play at noon for the right to take on Iowa State on Friday.

Kansas State and Kansas will renew their interstate rivalry at 2:20, while Texas A&M and Colorado kick off the evening session at 6:00.

The final game of the day will be between Texas Tech and Missouri.
