The Iowa State wrestling team got back on the winning track with a pair of easy dual victories over the weekend.

The Cyclones, in their first action since an 18-17 setback to Oklahoma two weeks ago, trounced Missouri 31-9 Friday at Hilton Coliseum.

Sunday the Cyclones traveled to Tempe, Ariz., and beat Arizona State by the same score. The two wins improve the Cyclones record to 18-2.

Friday night marked the return of all-American heavyweight Trent Hynek who had been sidelined with an injury since December.

Hynek, ranked second, gave up an early takedown but fought back to claim a 9-5 victory over Missouri’s Chad Hertzog and raise his record to 16-0.

“I felt comfortable tonight but I still need to get in shape. I was real tired out there,” said Hynek.

Cyclone head coach Bobby Douglas was happy to see his heavyweight back in the lineup.

“Trent is coming along well. His timing is off and he needs to get back into shape but he will get there,” said Douglas.

Cody and Cael Sanderson added technical fall victories to the Cyclone effort. Cody cruised to a 24-8 win at 133 while Cael dominated his way to a 27-10 victory at 184.

The pair wasted little time taking control as they combined to total 16 takedowns in the first period.

“Cody and Cael wrestled very aggressive tonight. They are using each match to prepare for the Big 12 Championships,” said Douglas.

The Big 12 tournament is March 4 in Lincoln, Neb.

Other Cyclones to score victories were Matt Azevedo at 125, Sonny Marchette at 141, Cole Sanderson at 157, Joe Heskett at 165 and Perry Parks at 174.

At 125, Azevedo coupled a third-period escape with a point from riding time to defeat Jesse West 2-0. West wrestled at Iowa State before transferring last season.

In the victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Cyclones got a big win from Heskett who defeated second-ranked Steve Blackford.

Heskett, top-ranked at 165, scored a takedown and three near-fall points in the third period to pull out a 6-3 win over Blackford.

Last season Blackford handed Heskett his only defeat in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament, but Heskett came back to defeat Blackford in the third place match.

Heskett is now 23-1 this season and 61-2 in his career.

Billy Maldonado and Cael Sanderson added first period pins. Maldonado, ranked 11th at 149, pinned eighth-rated Quinn Foster at 1:56.

Cael Sanderson flattened Mike Marshall in 2:49 at 184. Sanderson raised his record to 30-0 including nine falls and 11 technical falls.

Cody Sanderson recorded a 16-4 major decision while Marchette, Zach Thompson, Cole Sanderson, Perry Parks and Trent Hynek won decisions.

Parks turned in a big upset at 174 by knocking off No. 11 John Kopinsky by a 11-5 score.

Douglas coached the Sun Devils for 18 years before coming to Iowa State, and the win was his first at Tempe since leaving.
