GSB may take position on petition

The Government of the Student Body will meet tonight to discuss a resolution to support the faculty petition requesting a review of ISU President Martin Jischke and a bill to change the policy by which GSB allocates money to itself.

The resolution supports the request for a review by the Board of Regents of the current ISU tenure policy, stating, “The Government of the Student Body, voicing the opinion of ISU students, believes that President Martin C. Jischke’s current tenure policy rewards research at the expense of undergraduate education.”

Members of the faculty have been invited to the senate meeting, said Luke DeKoster, RCA and author of the resolution.

“We’re hoping to get a lot of faculty there,” he said. “I think there are a lot of faculty out there who have really potent opinions about this, and GSB needs to hear those.”

DeKoster said the administration deals with all dissent in the same way.

“They have their stock reactions,” he said. “They ignore it, discredit it, deny it or crush it. It’s as if they’re afraid of anyone who disagrees with them. That is the opposite of what students should be learning at the university.”

Although the petition was written and circulated by members of the faculty, DeKoster said this is an issue that affects students.

“The most direct way it impacts students is when good teachers are denied tenure because that’s all they are, good teachers,” he said. “It’s a symptom of the problem that money is more important than the ideal of learning.”

The resolution calls for the Board of Regents “to address the faculty petition with sincerity rather than the attitude of casual dismissal shown by their recent comments.”

DeKoster said the faculty members who wrote and signed the petition are worth listening to.

“They’re not people who are new on the scene and feel like raising some heat,” he said. “There’s got to be some merit there.”

In addition, the senate will discuss a bill to change the way GSB allocates money for its own purposes.

Currently, all allocations from the Senate Discretionary Account require a simple majority approval from the senate. This bill would change the bylaws to require a two-thirds majority to pass allocations from the discretionary account to GSB.

“A lot of senators really like the idea,” said Jonathon Weaver, TRA and author of the bill. “I think sometimes we get into the habit of giving ourselves more money without much thought.”

According to the resolution, GSB has allocated $11,500 in supplemental funds to itself in addition to the budgeted money.

Because the bill would change the bylaws, it requires two-thirds senate approval to pass.

“It won’t be an easy pass,” Weaver said. “I think the majority of the debate will be in favor of the bill, but it still might be difficult to get the two-thirds.”

The Government of the Student Body will meet tonight at 7 in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. The following will be discussed:
