ISU upends Oklahoma State

Iowa State continued its improbable run to a Big 12 conference championship with a 72-61 romp over Oklahoma State before a sold-out crowd at Hilton Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones, who jumped four spots to No. 14 in the Coaches’ Poll, were once again led by Marcus Fizer, who solidified his role as favorite for the Big 12 Player of the Year Award with 29 points.

The junior forward from Arcadia, La., has averaged more than 30 points in his last three games and was serenaded with chants of “one more year” from the enthusiastic throng on several occasions.

“I don’t think anybody in the country is playing better than Marcus Fizer right now,” Iowa State head coach Larry Eustachy said.

Iowa State jumped to an early lead and never let the Cowboys take control.

Besides Fizer’s big day, senior Michael Nurse, playing in his last home game, was a big factor in the win, hitting five three-pointers and scoring 15 points.

Fellow senior Stevie Johnson scored 12 points. Junior point guard Jamaal Tinsley added 12 while dishing out eight assists, grabbing five rebounds and taking five steals.

The five starters each played at least 36 minutes; Fizer and Kantrail Horton played the full 40 minutes.

“I’ve never been more proud of a group. We’ve had a lot of things to overcome this year, but we’ve got a lot of heart, and we’re tough,” Eustachy said.

The Cyclones now must sweep a two-game road trip in Texas to assure themselves sole possession of the Big 12 title.

Iowa State will take on Texas Tech Wednesday night and will travel to Waco to play Baylor on Saturday evening.
