Cyclones extend winning streak to 13 games

MANHATTAN, Kan. — It’s starting to no longer be a surprise. Continuing their solid play this season, the ISU Cyclones increased their school record winning streak to 13 games with a 72-61 win over Kansas State Wednesday night in Manhattan.

The Cyclones were led by Marcus Fizer, who tallied 17 points. Once again, it was Jamaal Tinsley who was the catalyst.

The point guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., scored 13 points, handed out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds for the game.

Imagine what he would’ve done if he had not been benched by Eustachy for 10 minutes in the first half.

“I didn’t like the way Jamaal started the game at all. He had a couple of turnovers and let his man get open for a couple of threes, and I wanted to send him a message. I was very proud of the way he responded,” Cyclone coach Larry Eustachy said.

The first 13 minutes saw the lead change hands 10 times, but the Cyclones went on a 9-0 spurt that gave them a lead they would not again relinquish at 28-20.

The Cyclones went on to a 38-30 lead at the intermission, lead by Fizer’s 11 points and a balanced attack which saw five players score at least five points.

The second half was controlled by Iowa State as well, as the closest they would let the Wildcats get was a 47-43 deficit with 14:00 left to play.

The Cyclones responded in kind with a jumper by Brandon Hawkins, and two free throws by Paul Shirley. They regained their eight-point advantage and never looked back.

“You have to give our guys a lot of credit. They didn’t play what I would call their best game of the year but still won going away on the road. It’s really impressive the way they’ve played,” Eustachy said.

Several Cyclones had outstanding efforts, including Shirley. The Kansas native had 14 points, and he sunk all eight of his foul shots, an area of the game that he had been struggling with.

“I thought Shirley was fantastic. He came off the bench and gave us a lift, hit his free throws and was strong inside,” Eustachy said.

Stevie Johnson continued his solid play with 12 points and six rebounds. He connected on all five of his shots from the field, and he hit both of his free throws as well.

“Stevie was great. He has improved his game so much this season and really has a big impact on winning for us,” Eustachy said.

Johnson was an integral part of Iowa State hitting on 50.9 percent of its shots, becoming the first team to make over half their shots against the Wildcats in 41 games.

“That’s a great stat. We were very focused tonight, and I thought before the game that Fizer and Michael Nurse really showed a lot of leadership for us,” Eustachy said.

Kansas State was led by Cortex Groves, who scored 19, and his backcourt mate Galen Morrison, who tallied 18. The pair combined for nine three-pointers, but struggled down the stretch.
