ISU men knock off No. 12 Kansas

As 14,092 fans filed out of Hilton Coliseum Saturday afternoon, the ISU pep band belted out Aretha Franklin’s motown classic “Respect.”

After beating No. 12 Kansas 74-66, the Cyclone men’s basketball team may have earned just that.

The Cyclones are ranked for the first time this season in the ESPN/Coaches’ poll at No. 24.

ISU was led in the game against Kansas by Marcus Fizer, who scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half.

The Cyclones were also buoyed once again by the performance of point guard Jamaal Tinsley. The junior scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out five assists, had three steals and blocked three shots.

ISU coach Larry Eustachy was surprised that the Cyclones were able to come up with the victory despite shooting just 32 percent for the game.

“To be able to do that shows that we have a lot of heart, a lot of character. We beat a good team today,” Eustachy said.

The game also marked the return home of Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich, two Kansas freshmen who hail from Iowa.

They both played well, despite the boos and chants of “sellout.”

Collison in particular sparkled, scoring 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the field. Hinrich, meanwhile, scored eight points for Kansas.
