GSB redefines election commissioner position

The Government of the Student Body Wednesday night passed a bill refining the position of the election commissioner to increase the incentive for year-round work.

Although GSB elections are held in the spring, the position of election commissioner “requires constant work,” according to the passed bill.

By increasing the election commissioner’s term and incentive, this bill ensures the fall duties, including revising the election code and figuring the apportionment of senate seats, will be accomplished “in a timely manner,” the bill states.

The election commissioner’s term now runs from the time of GSB senate approval until he or she resigns, is removed or is no longer enrolled.

Christian Edmiston, graduate, proposed a resolution that makes the term “subject to yearly reconfirmation by the senate.” This amendment passed to ensure a quality performance by the election commissioner.

“We are paying a sizable sum,” said Steve Skutnik, LAS. “We should have the chance to review.”

The position of election commissioner, currently held by Michel Pogge, off-campus senator, will receive a yearly stipend of $500.

The sum will be split into two payments; the election commissioner will receive $200 after the senate approves the apportionment of senate seats and the election code, both tasks which are to be competed within the fall semester. The second payment of $300 will be paid after the completion of the general GSB election in the spring, according to the bill.

A clause that would change the term length of election commission members was omitted. The clause proposed that the terms of committee members would follow the guidelines of the election commissioner’s term.

However, the current system, in which the election commissioner appoints the members on an annual basis, will stand.
