Women’s swimming falls to Hawks

The Iowa State women’s swimming and diving team couldn’t put it all together against arch rival University of Iowa Friday as the Hawkeyes overpowered the Cyclones 191-109 at Beyer Hall pool in Ames.

“It was the Iowa meet and the end of the semester, so we wanted to go out on a positive note,” ISU swimming coach Duane Sorenson said. “I was happy with a number of our individual swimmers, but I was disappointed that a number of other people didn’t step it up as we had hoped. I was hoping the score would be a little closer than what the final score was.”

ISU fell to 3-3 on the season despite strong performances from sophomore Amber McDowell and freshman Rena Kelinson. McDowell placed first in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events, while Kelinson won the 200-yard freestyle.

Kelinson’s time of 1:53.57 and McDowell’s 100 time of 0:58.56 were both lifetime bests.

“I was really happy and surprised with that time,” McDowell said of her 100 performance. “I concentrated on taking it relaxed ,and that really influenced how well I did.”

Sorenson said the strong effort shown by both McDowell and Kelinson emphasized their leadership roles on the team.

Kelinson said it is an honor to be named a team leader in her first year of competition.

“It makes me feel so good because I’m a freshman,” Kelinson said. “I have three more years to lead this team to victories and the best seasons they’ve ever had.”

The Cyclone diving team also came up with some solid performances as Jennifer Maupin placed third on both the one- and three-meter diving events.

Maupin’s three-meter score of 254.33 was her best of the season. ISU diving coach Jeff Warrick said two of Maupin’s dives were the best he’s seen out of her this season.

He said this shows how much more consistent she and the other Cyclone divers have become.

“We still have to continue to work on that, but I think it is getting better,” Warrick said. “This was a very big step.”
