“Video Plus” host Cool Will brings the latest music videos in hip-hop, rap and R&B Monday through Friday at 8 p.m. on ISU9, with new episodes airing on Thursdays.

Cool Will, whose real name is Will Bass, uses his sense of humor throughout the show as he dances around, goofs off and sings along with the videos.

“I like it because the people enjoy it and their enjoyment is my enjoyment,” Bass said. “It gives me a chance to be a little eccentric at times. When I get the response from the viewers that’s an enjoyment in itself.”

The host’s start came when a teacher offered him and a friend the chance to host the show because of their crazy personalities. When Larry, the show’s co-host at the beginning, graduated, Bass recruited a new co-host who went by the name of “6’1.” Now, Bass is back as the lone host.

“Video Plus” began as a 30-minute show, but Bass pushed for an hour format and he got it.

“I try to set it up from week to week and have a backup plan,” Bass said. “I ask people for information — I welcome the input. That’s why I put up my e-mail address every week.”

Finding material to play poses one of the biggest challenges for Bass, who has to convince record labels to send videos to the show.

“It takes a lot of calling and headaches,” Bass said. “You have to submit formats of the show to the record labels. You have to convince them your show’s up to par for the videos, and even then, it’s not guaranteed you’ll get them.”

Bass’ fans range from high-schoolers to older adults.

“People come up to me all the time and say ‘You’re Cool Will from TV,'” he said.

The coolest part about hosting the show is when the camera is on and he lets his character loose.

“I’m not as crazy off camera,” Bass said. “I’m a very reserved type of guy.”

Bass puts in a lot of time putting together the show, but he doesn’t do it alone.

“I think the majority of work comes from the crew,” he said. “I want to give strong credit to them — most loyal.”

So what does the crew think of Bass?

“Will’s fun to work with, the most laid back person I’ve ever known,” said Ben Picht, who operates the sound for “Video Plus.” “He steps out of his shell when the camera’s on, which is fun to see.”

Graphics coordinator Lisa Daaward also enjoys working with Bass. “He’s a blast. He’s our good friend, not just the host,” Daaward said.

As for the future of the show, Bass has one goal.

“Before it ends I want to bring an up-and-coming artist to the show,” Bass said. “Whoever wants to promote something — rap or sing. Folks who have something to offer.”
