Sanders, Turner, Moorer suspended
August 22, 1999
Cyclone football players Clyde Sanders, Ab Turner and Reggie Moorer were arrested early this summer on charges of check forgery.
The trio will miss Iowa State’s first contest of the year at home against Indiana State and may face additional repercussions.
All three were automatically suspended from the team at the time of their arrests, as is explicitly outlined in the ISU Student Athletic Code of Conduct.
Turner and Moorer are practicing with the team, but have been suspended as a result of their actions for the first game.
“Both have done a good job this summer of doing the things that I have asked of them,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “When you take some respect away from a football team by making bad decisions, then the least I can do is to make sure that [there is a penalty].”
McCarney is not, however, discounting the possibility that Turner and Moorer could play in the future.
“If they are good enough to come back and be in the mix for the Iowa game and the rest of the season, great,” he said.
Sanders, though, may not be so lucky.
In addition to his legal troubles, he has yet to obtain academic clearance from ISU and will not practice with the Cyclones until he is able to do so.
McCarney was not sure if Sanders would obtain the necessary clearance and, if he did, when that information would come.
“I don’t know if [he] will be with us or not,” McCarney said.
McCarney also said that any suspensions or penalties for Sanders will be dealt with only if and when he becomes eligible to play.
Sanders, a senior defensive lineman from Sacramento, Calif., started the first three games of 1998 before a knee injury limited his contribution for the remainder of the season. In nine games, he tallied 11 tackles, including one for a loss.
Turner, a junior linebacker from El Cajon, Calif., earned a starting spot last season and piled up over 60 tackles, including four for losses.
Moorer, a senior wide receiver from South Bay, Fla., has not yet seen action for the Cyclones, but did catch a pass for 15 yards in the 1999 spring game.
